Overview

Unitarian Church North (UCN) is an active and growing Unitarian Universalist congregation with about 225 voting members and 100 children and youth. People of all ages, racial and cultural identities, sexual and affectional orientations, and religious backgrounds are welcome here!

Vision Statement

"Unitarian Church North provides the light of religious freedom in the warmth of a caring community."

Mission

The mission of Unitarian Church North is to:

  • create a diverse and inclusive community;
  • promote free religious expression;
  • inspire spiritual and ethical growth; and
  • work for justice in our world.

What Do We Believe?

UCN is a member congregation of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA), which affirms the following seven principles:

  1. The inherent worth and dignity of every person
  2. Justice, equity, and compassion in human relations
  3. Acceptance of one another and encouragement of spiritual growth
  4. A free and responsible search for truth and meaning
  5. The right of conscience and use of the democratic process
  6. The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all
  7. Respect for the interdependent web of all existence

Unitarian Universalism is rooted in the Jewish and Christian traditions, and yet as a "non-creedal" religion we do not ask anyone to ascribe to a certain dogma or accede to a specific creed. Rather, as a liberal religion, we encourage our members to keep an open mind about religious questions, and to struggle with those questions in the company of others who may have differing experiences and perspectives. In our view, a person's own experience, conscience and thoughtfulness are more powerful in answering religious questions than any particular external authority figure or text or institution.

Sources of our Faith

Like other UUA-member churches, we at UCN regard the following as important foundations of our religious tradition:

  1. The world's great religious and ethical teachings, including Judaism, Christianity, Humanism, and Earth-centered spiritual traditions;
  2. The words and deeds of prophetic women and men throughout the ages; and
  3. Our own direct experience of the transcending mystery and wonder of life.

Denominational Connections

The powerful association between our denomination's member congregations is one of our greatest assets. That's why UCN is a fair-share dues-paying member of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA), the UUA's Central Midwest District (CMwD), and the SouthEast Wisconsin Unitarian Universalist Congregations (SEWUUC).

Every year, as a "fair-share" congregation, we contribute over $60 per member to these larger denominational groups in support of their missions, purposes, and programs. Please see the links page for links to these and other groups of interest.

In addition to our financial support, UCN members actively participate in the wider UU denomination. Our member-delegates attend the UUA General Assembly (G.A.) on a yearly basis, representing UCN in matters of denominational importance, including governance issues, statements of conscience, and other resolutions. UCN also has direct member representation and participation on the SEWUUC Board.
