Unitarian Church North c. 1990

Building and landscape

In the early 1980's, as membership grew, the need for a church building became increasingly evident. Eight acres of land east of Port Washington Road in Mequon were purchased in 1980. Members of the church had admired the architecture of the octagonal Clausing barns built in Ozaukee County in the 1800's, and hoped to acquire one for a church building. When that proved impractical a new "barn" was designed and built, with church members taking an active part in the finishing of the building. It was dedicated in October,1987.

With the character of the building dominating the site, the congregation voted to maintain a "natural" landscape in keeping with the rural setting. The property has been planted and maintained with this end in view. The most visible feature, the prairie circle in front of the church, was planted in 1988, and is burned periodically for maintenance. Memorial structures including the bridge, limestone bench, gazebo, and split rail fences have been added, together with many memorial and donated plantings. Today our colorful prairie flowers and tall grasses provide a visible welcome to the church. In 2000 a new long range planning effort was begun, and a major focus of that plan was expansion of the current building to meet the needs of the congregation. A capital campaign was undertaken beginning in 2003 to raise funds, and an architectural master plan commissioned. The congregation voted to purchase the 11 acre property to the north to assure space for future needs. In spring of 2005 phase one of the building expansion was begun, and the new and remodeled space opened for use in January 2006. It features a new and larger church office, larger offices for the minister and director of religious education, and new classrooms and multipurpose rooms. Fire sprinkler and alarm systems and an elevator were installed. Parking space has been increased and paving extended. The new lobby offers a pleasant space for after church coffee and other gatherings.

The sanctuary and meeting rooms are available for rental during the week and on Sunday afternoons and evenings.
